Mr. McCain was treated last Friday to remove a blood clot above his left eye. The brain tumor — known as a glioblastoma — was discovered during that procedure, the statement said.
The 80-year-old senator is recovering at home in Arizona after undergoing a procedure to remove a blood clot from above his eye last week.
“The senator’s doctors say he is recovering from his surgery ‘amazingly well’ and his underlying health is excellent,” the statement said.
He may undergo chemotherapy and radiation for treatment, the statement said.
Mr. McCain, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, had alerted the public over the weekend that he was undergoing medical treatment and would not be able to attend a vote on health care that Senate leaders had initially hoped to schedule this week.
It was not known until Wednesday how serious his condition was.
