Amazing! Doctor Grows Ear On Man’s Arm To Replace One He Lost In A Horrific Accident

A surgeon has managed to grow an ear on a man’s arm, using cartilage from his rib.
The patient in his late thirties, named only as Mr Ji, lost his own ear in a traffic accident, when the whole right side of his face was torn off.


Since then, he has had numerous plastic surgery operations to rebuild his appearance but still felt uncomfortable without one of his ears.

‘I lost one ear. I have always felt that I am not complete,’ he told China Daily .
For the pioneering surgery, doctors cut rib cartilage into the shape of an ear and placed it underneath a flap of skin on his arm for it to grow.

The transplant has three stages, taking place at the the hospital affiliated with Xi’an Jiaotong University in Shaanxi province, China.

First, surgeon Guo Shuzhong put a skin expander in Mr Ji’s arm to make space for the ear by injecting water inside to increase volume.

Next, they built the ear and inserted it into the new space that was there.
The next stage will be to transplant the ear onto his head in around four months time.
Mr Ji is excited about it, saying that when he glances down at the ear, it looks just like the old one.
