Minutes after Andy Murray and brother Jamie lost their first round doubles match, world No 1 Djokovic went down 7-6 7-6 to Del Potro in an incredible match which left both players overcome with emotion.
Djokovic had not been beaten in the first round of any tournament since January 2009 in Brisbane.
